Boston Duck Tours To Add Second Staff Member To Boats

BOSTON (CBS) -- In the wake of recent duck boat crashes involving pedestrians, Boston Duck Tours announced it is adding a second staff member to all of its tours.

Duck tours had previously been conducted with a staff member who would drive the boats and narrate the tour. The change would allow for one so-called conDUCKtor to focus on driving, while the additional conDUCKtor will serve as the guide.

Two incidents, one of which involved a fatal collision with a motor scooter, prompted Boston Duck Tours to revise their procedure.

28-year-old Allison Warmuth was killed on April 30 when her motor scooter collided with a duck boat. Warmuth's family has since called for a review of the tour's safety procedures.

"We are eager to move forward with this new staffing plan," said Boston Duck Tours CEO Cindy Brown said in a public statement.  "There is a lot of work to do.  Boston is our home; we recognize what a privilege it is to serve residents and visitors and it has always been our commitment to do so utilizing best-in-class safety practices."

The change takes effect at the start of the 2017 season.
