Several people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation.

One person, later identified as 71-year-old Stanly Smith, was found dead inside an apartment on the third floor.

Residents were temporarily evacuated, but were allowed back inside a short time later with the exception of the unit below where flames began.

"I was running around, trying to open the windows and everything to get the smoke out, but then they were evacuating and I said 'Oh no, I have to get my mother and son out of there,'" resident Susan Hilliard said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
