'We're Grieving': 18-Year-Old Killed In Haverhill Crash Identified

HAVERHILL (CBS) -- The driver killed in a rollover car crash on I-495 Saturday has been identified as an 18-year-old from Methuen.

Massachusetts State Police say Alexis Spartz was driving a 2004 Lincoln LS in Haverhill when she lost control of the car and rolled over.

Methuen Superintendent of Schools Judith Scannell said Spartz graduated last year.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Alexis a sweet young lady was a 2017 MHS graduate. This is a tragic loss," said Scannell.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger was seriously hurt. Her name has not been released by police.

"I can tell you this. We're grieving in Methuen," said Mayor James Jajuga.

Both women were trapped in the car following the crash.

An off-duty Methuen firefighter was able to pull Spartz out of the wreck and began emergency medical treatment. An off-duty state trooper also helped.

"Obviously I'm very proud of both of them. They tried their best to help one of the young women and didn't succeed. Unfortunately, it was beyond them," said Jajuga. "They tried their best along with the Haverhill Fire Department."

Spartz later died at Lawrence General Hospital. Her passenger has since been transferred to a Boston hospital.
