Wicomico Co. Announces It Will Stop Using Speed Cameras

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Wicomico County officials have announced they will no longer be using speed cameras.

Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver says that the county's contract with mobile speed camera system RedSpeed USA will not be renewed when it runs out in December. The county's cameras are in cars and were meant to help enforce speed limits in school zones.

Culver says drivers are no longer speeding as often, meaning the cameras are no longer making money like they used to. An internal audit by the county shows the number of citations issued went from more than 500 in October 2012 to fewer than 100 citations by the end of 2014.

The county will remain registered with the company so they have the option to bring the program back in the future.
