During the War of 1812, Fort McHenry, located in the Baltimore Harbor, became the inspiration that drove Francis Scott Key to pen the "Star-Spangled Banner." As the British Navy bombarded the fort, Key, who was on a ship in the bay, watched through the night as blast after blast hit the fort. Operated by the National Park Service, Fort McHenry is an excellent place to learn about the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

The Maryland Science Center at Baltimore's Inner Harbor is a testament to the important role Baltimore has and continues to play in scientific advancements. Exhibits, some of which change from time to time, include dinosaurs, Maryland blue crab, the Earth, physics, technology and more. For a close encounter with ancient history, check out the "Mummies of the World" exhibit.

During the Civil War, the Union Army founded the National Museum of Health and Medicine. Its mission was to collect specimens for the advancement of military medicine and surgery. Following World War II, the museum was made into a division of the Army Institute of Pathology, which later became the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Exhibits include items related to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The facility is also an archive for a large collection of medical history and research information.

The home of an internationally recognized collection of 19th century contemporary and modern art, the Baltimore Museum of Art was founded in 1914. Currently, it is the repository for about 90,000 pieces of art. It is known to hold the largest collection of the work of French painter, Henri Matisse. Other collections include decorative arts, prints and drawings and items from ancient America and other cultures. It also sports a sculpture garden.

A trip to Baltimore would be incomplete without a stop at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Sports Legends Museums. As the home to the Baltimore Orioles, the Baltimore Ravens and other teams, the city has a rich sports history. While many people know that Babe Ruth found fame with the New York Yankees, they may not know he was born in Baltimore and began his career in Baltimore. At the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, exhibits mark the city and state's sports history. It also features a kid's discovery room.
