WEATHER BLOG: Rain Mixing With Snow

A very complex forecast continues as a coastal storm will develop along the east coast during the day on Sunday. Models are generally converging on a further east solution with this system which will generally mean less of an impact compared to previous runs. Much of this is due to two factors:

  1. A "kicker system" that will be diving out of Canada and pushing the low further east.
  1. The primary shortwave trough will still be in a positive tilt, with later cyclogenesis expected over the open ocean.

For today, rain will build into the region during the late morning and continue through the evening. It will begin to mix with snow tonight as dynamic cooling takes effect. Roads will generally be wet with accumulations restricted to mainly grassy surfaces. By tonight, there will be a lull in the precipitation during the overnight hours as the main piece of energy takes shape off of the Carolina coast. The rain/snow mixture will return close to dawn and continue through the day on Sunday.

The snow will mainly accumulate on grassy surfaces on Sunday and continue through the day and into the evening hours. It will continue to mix with rain throughout the day as well, before changing over to mainly snow around dusk. ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE A COATING TO AN INCH. Throughout this event, roads will just be wet. Accumulations will be restricted to grassy surfaces with the ground still being very warm. The storm system will move off to the north and east during the overnight hours Sunday.

For Monday, drier air will filter in and pleasant sunshine will break out. A moderating trend is expected by Tuesday as a dip in the jetstream out west brings a southwesterly flow into the region. A shower is possible Tuesday night, but will be more likely to the north with a frontal boundary stalling out. The moderating trend will continue through Wednesday and Thursday before a storm system pulls in on Friday bringing the next shot for rain.
