WEATHER BLOG: Heat Wave Over---For Now
The heat wave is over...for now.
Temperatures topped out at 90 degrees or higher for 12 straight days. That included three days with highs at 100 degrees or higher, and two records tied or broken. Statistically, we are at our hottest stretch of the year. But the average is 88 degrees, not the 90s that have been baking us. Unfortunately, the death toll continues to grow from the extended heat for both the city and the state.
Monday, the mercury only rose to 86 degrees. That's back below average, thanks to a cold front that started to move through Sunday. It produced severe thunderstorms from Anne Arundel County south Sunday, then led to a round of rain Monday morning. That front is SLOWLY moving south still Monday evening, where it will stall out for the next few days.
The front will be close enough for an occasional shower or thunderstorm, especially across southern Maryland the next few afternoons. However, we will sit on the northern, cooler side of the storm, so temperatures will be closer to the average for most of the week.
That front will slowly get dragged back up to the north again starting Thursday night or Friday. That will increase our shower and thunderstorm chances heading into the weekend.
