WEATHER BLOG: Cloudy And Cool

The gentle flow from off the Atlantic that has kept much of the region dull and on the slightly coolish side will persist Sunday into Monday, although the clouds should break for some sunshine as a pocket of drier air aloft (between 5,000 and 20,000 feet) mixes down and punches holes in the clouds. Temperatures should peak within a few degrees of 70 both Sunday and on Monday.

A vigorous jet stream disturbance moving from the Midwest to the Great Lakes on Monday and Tuesday will cause a zone of low pressure zone and attendant cold front to move from Chicago Monday morning to Lake Ontario early on Tuesday. The low will draw moist air north along the Eastern Seaboard causing rain to approach and overspread the region late Monday night and on Tuesday.

A sprawling zone of high pressure building across the central Atlantic Ocean will try to block the eastward progress of the low, causing it to trudge slowly northeast to near Quebec City by late Wednesday. The cold front trailing the low will likewise move slowly and become nearly stationary along the East Coast. As a result the threat for rain will persist into Wednesday. Meanwhile, another jet stream disturbance will move north along a front causing another low pressure zone to cross the region, maintaining the threat for showers into much of the day on Wednesday and probably Thursday. Winds from the NW will direct cooler air into the area on Thursday.

The disturbance and associated new low should exit the region by Friday, though lingering moisture in the lower atmosphere may produce clouds and spotty showers across the region, especially the interior. It will stay cool. High pressure will arrive over the weekend bringing a return of sunshine and warmer conditions.
