Town, Company Announce Plans For Medical-marijuana Facility

HANCOCK, Md. (AP) -- Officials say that a medical-marijuana company has partnered with a Washington County town for plans to open a new operation in the area.

The Herald-Mail reports in a statement released Thursday, Hancock officials announced that the municipality has entered into an agreement with Harvest, which is a medical cannabis cultivation, production and dispensary company.

Officials say that the company, which operates facilities in several other states, plans to apply for one of the state's 15 cultivation licenses this year.

Harvest's CEO Steve White says that the group saw Hancock as "an ideal place" for a Maryland cultivation center after seeing the need for new jobs.

Officials say Harvest anticipates that at full capacity the facility would employ 124 people with initial construction costs of about $11.5 million.
