Thousands At Annual MLK Parade, Despite Bitter Cold

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- We remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And despite the bitter cold, it's a large turnout for the annual Dr. King Parade through downtown Baltimore.

Ava-joye Burnett with more on Monday's tribute to Dr. King.

The parade route was appropriately right along MLK Boulevard. For many people, it symbolized a start to the city's healing.

It's a long-time tradition that never gets old: the drumline, dancers, and yes, the spectators lining MLK Boulevard for a parade honoring its namesake.

This is the 16th year for this parade. Not even the sub-freezing temperatures could keep people away.

Many people wouldn't miss this for the world.

"Every year, right here in the same spot. Every year. In the storm, I'm here with [my scooter]," said Houston Jones. "It's worth it. What he went through, it's worth it."

"It's beautiful. I'm glad to see us come together as one for a change," said Margaret Wiley.

The theme this year, One Baltimore, is meant to unify the city after a rough 2015.

"It's going to take all of us to come together and realize the trajectory of our city," said Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore City State's Attorney.

"It's great. Even though it's cold, it's a really great day to see Baltimore turn out for a parade like this. It's wonderful," said Ted Blankenship.

About 50 groups participated Monday, including members of Dr. King's fraternity.

"In school, we learned about Martin Luther King. He talked about a dream and how he saved people's lives," little Kimora Allen said.

The city estimated at least 10,000 people participated Monday.
