Thaw Underway After Weekend Ice Storm
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Maryland got hit with another wave of winter weather over the weekend, and sidewalks are still icy.
Rick Ritter has more.
Another winter storm, another knockout punch. Mother Nature packed it all into Sunday's mess, leaving her mark across the region.
"Snow, sleet, ice. It's very dangerous," said Wayne McLeod.
Along state highways, the accidents pile in due to slick conditions. Drivers are lucky to be alive.
"I have no idea how but I came across these four lanes and ended up on this hill," said Miranda, who crashed her car.
In Towson, it was another morning of chipping away cars swallowed by ice.
"I didn't shovel at all yesterday so I was hoping the layer of snow would help me get the ice off the ground," said one girl.
Across Baltimore City, it took some business hours just to shovel the frozen mess and get their sidewalks cleared---like Wayne McLeod at Baltimore's Celebrity Cuts.
"We have seen constantly people falling. We helped a couple people up," he said.
Throughout Hampden, sidewalks were treacherous, to say the least.
"This isn't right. This just shouldn't be," said Hampden resident Sharon Bayne.
Residents risked their lives just to get to work.
"You have to walk in the street to get to where you're going and take a chance at getting hit by a car," Bayne said.
With temperatures expected to drop overnight, the State Highway Administration braces for the worst as this winter season continues to wreak havoc.
"Anything that melts today has potential overnight tonight to refreeze again," said Charlie Gischlar. "If we can prevent one person from getting injured, we've done our job."
With sidewalks a mess, more people are walking in the street. SHA urges motorists to pay attention and not be distracted. They also advise drivers to assume anything that appears to be a wet spot at night is ice and to drive slowly and shift into lower gears.
