Strikeforce Strikeout?
Strikeforce MMA hit CBS Saturday night. Free access to a national TV Audience. But, at what cost in the end?
CBS tried to capitalize on the popularity of the UFC Saturday night by providing a national TV audience with free MMA fights. This card could have served as a barometer as to exactly how popular MMA is on a national level. Instead, it was a sideshow. A weak card from a weak brand that included only one big-named star: Dan Henderson, formerly of the UFC.
Dan Henderson offers thunderous punches. But, he cannot deliver ratings on his own. Neither could a post fight brawl makes the product no better than boxing.
CBS would need to partner with UFC for a true gauge. Unfortunately, the UFC does not need CBS. Strikeforce is a joke. A minor league. It would be like CBS trying to judge the pulse of the popularity of football in America by showcasing United Football League games instead of the NFL.
I guess the arguments will continue for now.
