Steve Davis: Ed Reed Coming Back?

Let me begin by saying that I assume that Ed Reed is going to be back next year. That said, his comments to the Florida Sun Sentinel Thursday night when he was being inducted into the University of Miami Hall of Fame certainly are curious.

"There's a lot of talk out there. I'm not going to say I'm 50-50 because I'm not. I want to play football. But it's something me and my team have been discussing the last couple of weeks. My partners, they do a great job of making sure I know the pros and cons of what's going on with my body and with the organization and where we're at. I plan on doing it, but depending, it could change."

I'm not sure what to make of this. He seems to suggest that maybe he won't come back. Maybe this was innoccuous, or maybe there's more to it. Joe Flacco and Lardarius Webb each have one year left on their contracts, and the Ravens have said they want to get both players signed before their contracts expire. Reed has one year left, and we've heard very little about extending him. One has to wonder if this is his way of jockeying for another contract, because he also indicated he thinks he can play 4 more years. I don't think anyone thinks that is likely. This could be nothing....or, with Ed, it could be something.
