Steel Beams Delivered To Md. 9/11 Memorial Site

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — They're 25 feet long and weigh more than two tons. They're a big piece of American history that will be unveiled on the 10 year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Andrea Fujii has the story.

The centerpiece for the Maryland Sept. 11 memorial has arrived outside the Baltimore World Trade Center.

The  beams spanned between the 94th and 97th floors of the World Trade Center North Tower before tumbling to the ground on Sept. 11, 2001.

"We wanted to remove some of the loose rust and some of the loose paint but didn't want it to be a shiny piece of metal," said Diane Fullick, artifact conservator.

Thirteen Marylanders died in the towers, 53 in the Pentagon and two on Flight 93. This memorial is dedicated to them.

"Fifty, 100 years from now when children are walking around they'll say 'Wow, look at it. Look what happened,'" said Rand Griffin, memorial chairman.

Once the memorial is unveiled, people will be able to touch the metal beams and artifacts from the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa.

It's already becoming a teaching tool for the Dodd family visiting from Virginia.

"We were going over to the aquarium, didn't expect to see this and it was nice chance to give the boys a little history lesson," said Steven Dodd, father.

It's a permanent reminder of 68 Marylanders who died American heroes.

The local 9/11 memorial ceremony will be Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. outside the Baltimore World Trade Center. It you'd like to contribute to the memorial fund, click here.
