Severe Storms Hit Mid-Atlantic, Knock Out Power To Thousands

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands are without power in the mid-Atlantic region as severe storms blow through.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of the region through Sunday night as heavy rain and string winds pass through.

Sterling, Virginia-based meteorologist Kevin Witt says spotters in Frederick, Baltimore and Harford counties are reporting gusts of 40 to 50 mph. He says there have been reports of some trees down onto power lines. He says storms are still moving through the region.

Around 6:15 p.m., local utilities are reporting about 9,700 customers without power in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Baltimore Gas and Electric is reporting 3,300 customers without power, Dominion Power is reporting nearly 2,300 and Delmarva Power is reporting about 3,600 customers in the dark.
