Service Dog Shot By Off-Duty DC Police Officer

GREENBELT, Md. (WJZ)—Police in Greenbelt are investigating after a service dog is shot by an off-duty police officer, according to WUSA9.

It happened last weekend when police say a service dog , a Pitbull mix named Cleo, was shot after running toward an off-duty Metropolitan Police Department officer.

WUSA9 reports that that the owner, who is deaf, thought her dog had been in a fight.

The officer says that Cleo ran towards her aggressively "bearing teeth" and that she feared for her safety.

Prior to the shooting, Cleo was apparently unleashed upon leaving a dog park  which may have to the shooting incident.

The dog's owner was charged to be filed against the officer.
