Reward Increased For Information In Marine's Death

THURMONT, Md. (WJZ) -- A month has passed since a U.S. Marine was struck and killed in Frederick County while helping a disabled motorist on the side of the road.

Now the reward is being increased for information in his death, after no one has come forward with information about the driver who struck him.

Cpl. William Ferrell, 21, of Carthage, N.C., was struck and killed shortly before 11 p.m. on Sept. 29. on northbound Route 15 in Thurmont, Md.

Ferrell was assigned to the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont and worked at Camp David.

He had stopped to help a motorist who's vehicle broke down during the rainstorm and while he was standing outside of his truck, another unknown vehicle struck him.

State Police investigators believe the striking vehicle was a heavy duty pick-up truck with a dual wheel axle. The truck is believed to be towing a trailer and was most likely a "goose-neck" type trailer.

Once Ferrell was struck, the motorist from the disabled vehicle tried to divert traffic away from the marine's body.

Two vehicles passed before a tractor-trailer driver helped to block traffic.

The striking vehicle did briefly pull over north of the crash before continuing north.

The initial reward for information offered by Metro Crime Stoppers was up to $2,000, but that reward has more than doubled this week, thanks to a donation of $2,500 from the National Warriors Foundation.  The Maryland Troopers Association is offering an additional reward of $1,000 for information, as is a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

The total reward available now stands at up to $6,500.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP, or 1-866-756-2587.  Phone calls are not recorded and callers may remain anonymous.
