Police Search For Suspect Who Dragged Officer After Being Pulled Over

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A traffic stop turns into a life threatening situation for a Baltimore police officer. A suspect drags him hundreds of feet. Right now, that suspect is on the loose.

Tracey Leong with more on how the situation unfolded.

WJZ has learned the officer was released from Shock Trauma earlier Tuesday. He is recovering after nearly being killed.

A routine traffic stop turns violent. When the officer approached the driver's side, the suspect then sped off, dragging the officer with his car several hundred feet on Mount Royal Avenue.

"He knew he was hurting the officer and appears to care less," said Donny Moses, Baltimore City Police Department.

The car that hit the officer is a gray Acura TL with Maryland plates. It was found deserted a half mile from the scene on East 21st Street.

The officer managed to free himself from the car. He radioed for help and was brought to Shock Trauma.

It is unclear why the officer pulled him over, but after putting the officer's life in danger, the suspect could face a slew of charges.

"Assault to attempted murder to various traffic infractions, which... you're just adding on to whatever you were pulled over for," said Moses.

Police are unsure if the owner was the driver at the time. They're asking witnesses and the suspect to come forward.

"Turn yourself in," said Moses.

The car is not listed as stolen. Police believe the driver was just being pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. Now he could face much worse.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
