HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police are releasing the name of a state prison inmate who was apparently slain at the medium-security Maryland Correctional Institution near Hagerstown.

Police said Wednesday that Deavel Johnson, 22, died late Tuesday.

They say a correctional officer noticed Johnson bleeding from an upper body wound shortly before he collapsed at about 10:30 p.m. Police say the prison staff provided emergency care before Johnson was taken to a hospital.

Police say Johnson was in a "dormitory area" of the prison. That's an open housing area with bunk beds for up to 64 inmates.

Dormitory-style housing is provided at some prisons for low-security inmates and those with exemplary behavior.

Johnson was serving a four-year sentence for a 2012 first-degree burglary conviction in Howard County.
