Baltimore County police officer shoots at armed woman in Middle River

A Baltimore County police officer shot at a woman after she displayed a knife and a gun in Middle River on Thursday morning, according to police.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of Carroll Island Road for a report of an armed woman wanted in connection with an assault.

When officers found the woman, she was inside her vehicle. As officers began engaging with her, police said she surrendered a knife.

Police said the woman then produced a firearm, prompting an officer to shoot at her. She was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Police said on Friday the woman remains in the hospital in critical condition.

CBS News Baltimore was at the scene when a red vehicle with out-of-state plates was towed from the area. The vehicle's rear window was shattered.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the shooting in what they described as a quiet community.

"I can't believe it because it's quiet down here," said Middle River resident Bill Donithan. "You know, there's nothing down here."

One neighbor told CBS News Baltimore that his wife and children were just feet from the scene as they were leaving for school when they saw police confronting the woman near the end of their driveway.

At the time, he said, they did not realize the situation was dangerous.

"Disturbing, to say the least," said John, a neighbor. "It's always been a quiet neighborhood. That's why I moved here, because of the quietness."

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, police said.
