No. 22 Maryland Cruises Past UMBC 71-45
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Tianna Hawkins scored 16 points in her first start of the season and No. 22 Maryland coasted past Maryland-Baltimore County 71-45 Friday night for its eighth straight victory.
The Terrapins (9-1) scored the game's first 15 points, led 40-16 at halftime and 61-35 with 7 minutes left. Maryland is 10-0 in the crosstown series that began in 1987.
Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, went 7 for 10 from the floor, made both her free throws and grabbed five rebounds. She earned a starting spot after scoring 17 points in 18 minutes during Maryland's previous game, against Loyola (Md.).
Anjale Barrett had 12 points and Alyssa Thomas added 10 for the Terrapins.
Erin Brown scored 14 and Tope' Obajolu had 10 points for UMBC (4-6). The Retrievers had seven turnovers and missed five shots before Obajolu made their first field goal on a jumper in the lane with 11:44 left in the first half to make it 19-4.
UMBC also scored the next five points, but the Terps answered with a 17-2 run to go up 36-11 with 3 minutes to go before halftime.
Maryland shot 63 percent in the first half, out rebounded UMBC 16-8 and limited the Retrievers to 5-for-18 shooting from the floor.
The Terrapins have exams next week and won't play again until Dec. 19 at Delaware State.
