NC Man Gets 2 Life Sentences For Brutal Deaths Of Estranged Md. Wife, Son
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A North Carolina man has been sentenced to two consecutive sentences of life without parole for the 2011 killings of his estranged wife and her 11-year-old son in Maryland.
Curtis M. Lopez told his estranged wife's relatives before being sentenced Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court that he was sorry for their loss.
Lopez was convicted in January of fatally striking Jane McQuain with a dumbbell and then beating her son, William, to death with a baseball bat. The boy's body was found in the woods following a massive manhunt.
Prosecutors said Lopez killed his estranged wife so that he could steal her car and other personal belongings from her Germantown home. He was later arrested in the Charlotte area.
Prosecutors agreed to not seek the death penalty against Lopez.
