National Zoo's Baby Panda Cub Named Bei Bei
WASHINGTON (WJZ)—The National Zoo's surviving panda cub born in August, was named Bei Bei this morning.
Bei Bei, which means precious treasure, is the baby panda of Mei Xiand and Tian Tian.
The announcement was made this morning with First Lady Michelle Obama and the first lady of the People's Republic of China Peng Liyuan.
Bei Bei was one of two cubs born last month. The other new born cub died a few days after being born.
Tian Tian is the father of Mei Xiang's other cubs, daughter Bao Bao and son Tai Shan. During this year's panda breeding, Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated with semen from Tian Tian and a panda in China that was deemed a good genetic match.
