Montgomery Co. Aims To Stop Panhandling, Accidents

WHEATON, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County is launching a new initiative to stop panhandling and prevent accidents.

Local media reports County Executive Isaiah Leggett will announce the new program called "Give a Hand-Up, Not a Hand-Out" on Monday in Wheaton.

The program encourages drivers to donate to county social services rather than giving cash directly to panhandlers.

County officials said the new initiative is a response to the death of a known panhandler killed in traffic in the Wheaton area in May.
