ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Not even "The Cat in the Hat" can avoid Maryland's debate on pension reform and education funding in the state Senate.
A Republican senator objected Wednesday to comments made from the Senate dais by the vice president of the Maryland State Education Association, during an event celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday that promotes reading.
With a person dressed as the Cat in the Hat standing beside her, Betty Weller recited a rhyme calling on lawmakers to "keep their promises." The association is leading a campaign to avoid budget cuts to education.
Sen. David Brinkley, R-Frederick, says it was inappropriate for the union to lobby from the dais on the Senate floor. Republican Joseph Getty, R-Carroll, supported Brinkley's objection.
