Md. Senate OKs Jail For Adults Hosting Teen Drinking Parties

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Adults could go to jail for hosting a teen drinking party at their home or providing alcohol to minors under a bill that's cleared the Maryland Senate.

The unanimous vote Thursday would create a potential one-year sentence for a first offense. It also raises the maximum fine from $2,500 to $5,000.

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Brian Feldman, a Montgomery County Democrat. A similar bill is being sponsored in the House by Delegate David Fraser-Hidalgo, a Montgomery County Democrat.

It is called "Alex and Calvin's Law" after two Wootton High School graduates. Eighteen-year-olds Alex Murk and Calvin Li were killed in an alcohol-related crash last year after leaving a North Potomac party where alcohol was served with a parent present.
