Md. Police Investigate North Branch Inmate Death
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at a maximum-security prison in Cumberland.
Police and correctional officials say the 57-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday night at the North Branch Correctional Institution. Investigators say the man's cell mate apparently approached a correctional officer to report something was wrong.
Authorities have not identified the deceased inmate. He was serving a 40-year sentence on a rape charge.
Correctional officers performed CPR on the man Thursday night until paramedics arrived. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
