BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore Deputy Mayor Kaliope Parthemos will don designer dresses and walk down a runway on Saturday as part of a fashion show fundraiser.

The Steps to the Cure event will raise money for Maryland breast cancer patients.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the 40-year-old Baltimore native was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer a few weeks ago. Since the fall, she's had multiple surgeries to remove the tumors as well as lymph nodes for testing and soon will begin seven weeks of five-day-a-week radiation treatments. Her mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor.

Parthemos says she will walk on the runway with Dr. Nina Rawlings, who is a pediatrician and the mother of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Parthemos has known them since middle school.
