Maryland Weather: Alert Day In Effect For Western Maryland Due To Wind Threat

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- After waking up to a glaze of ice, we are drying out and temperatures are above freezing.

An Alert Day remains in effect through this evening for far western Maryland, specifically Allegany and Garrett counties.

These counties are under a Wind Advisory through 7 p.m., and a combination of ice and strong winds could damage trees and power lines.

Winds blowing from the west-northwest packing 20- to 35-mph speeds are likely, with gusts up to 60 mph possible.

In central Maryland, the rest of our Friday will be bright and blustery. Winds will pick up in the wake of a cold front, with 35-mph gusts possible.

While winds will be a factor, we shouldn't see the whipping winds our neighbors in western Maryland are dealing with.

Clouds will slowly but surely clear out through the afternoon and temperatures will top out in the 50s before frigid air takes hold.

Overnight temperatures will dip into the low to mid 20s.

On Saturday, we'll see a chilly high of 42° with a mixture of sunshine and cloud cover.

By Sunday, we're  in the low 50s, but it will be accompanied by gusty winds.
