74-Year-Old Man Killed In Early Morning Fire Tried To Alert Neighbors
BALTIMORE (WJZ) --- A man has been killed during a fire which broke out early Friday morning. As Mike Schuh reports, it seems Lynlade Gordan was trying to warn his neighbors about the danger before he died.
The fire which broke out just after 3 a.m. took Joe Garrett's friend's life away. They had been friends for 30 years.
"We were just the best of friends and he will be sorely missed, without a doubt," Garrett said.
Before the mass of flames and smoke on the 3800 block of Greenspring Avenue killed Gordan, he was able to do one more thing.
"My sister had come to the door to get some air because of the smoke," Garrett said. "Then when she came to the door, she saw flames shoot out the window."
But, by this time Gordan warned Garrett's sister, who was staying with Garrett, about the fire.
"She heard a banging, heard a voice, but couldn't make out what was being said," Garrett said.
Gordan was found on the first floor of his house. He was taken a few blocks away to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbors say the 74-year-old retired security guard has children and grandchildren in Baltimore.
"I can't believe he's gone and what makes it so bad is I saw the whole thing unfolding before my eyes, you know," Garrett said.
The fire increased rush hour traffic time since the hill needed to be salted before it could be reopened.
