Investigation Into Fatal Ice Cream Shop Accident Takes Bizarre Turn
GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ) -- An out of-control car plowed into a crowd outside a Glen Burnie ice cream shop. The driver eventually died. But it was what police found next that really caught their attention.
Weijia Jiang had the latest on the twist in the investigation.
A chain reaction of disaster unfolded at the Ann's Dari-Creme in Glen Burnie after a station wagon plowed into a picnic table packed with customers. The driver was killed.
"There was about 15 people outside. Everyone was figuring out what to do," said Amber Collazo.
Police say Lamonte Sherman, 39, was leaving the apartment complex across the street around 10 p.m. Sunday.
"The vehicle lost control, traveled over both lanes of Ritchie Highway, struck a table at Ann's Dari-Creme where a 15-year-old girl and her family were seated," said Lt. John McAndrew, Anne Arundel County Police.
But there's a bizarre twist in the case. Paramedics say Sherman's injuries don't match with those from a car accident. They realized he had been stabbed before the crash, which witnesses described as horrific.
"The whole front was mashed in. The hood was up, the whole driver's side wheel was completely off," said Pat Schreiber.
Each one of the metal tables at the ice cream shop is drilled into the sidewalk with heavy bolts. When Sherman hit one of them, the table was ripped out of the cement and dragged to a nearby parking lot.
"Devastating, absolutely horrible. As much as we come here, I would never think a car coming off Ritchie Highway to the center here," said Cathy Gardner.
As the teen and another victim recover from being hit, homicide detectives work to find the person who stabbed Sherman.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Anne Arundel County Police or Metro Crime Stoppers.
