Investigation Continues Into Ocean City, Maryland Crash That Injured 8 People, Including Toddler
OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) -- A split-second decision Sunday afternoon saved the life of an 18-month-old girl involved in an accident along the Route 90 bridge.
"There is no question a small child's life was saved yesterday, there's no question in my mind," Ocean City Fire Chief Richard Bowers said.
Just after 2:45 pm Sunday a five-car collision shut down the bridge. Cars were left mangled and one pickup truck could be seen hanging off the side.
"The 18 month-old-child was ejected from that vehicle and landed in the Assawoman Bay." Bowers said.
A Good Samaritan, who wished to remain anonymous, saw the crash and witnessed the child go over. Chief Bowers said that person wasted no time, and jumped in.
"Immediately acted, without regard for that person's own safety and wellbeing. Immediately went over the bridge, into the water and saved that baby's life," Bowers said.
Eight people were hurt. The child was flown to Johns Hopkins and is still in the hospital recovering, the other seven were transported, treated and have been released.
Had the humble hero not acted, Bowers said the child may have died.
"The humble hero got to the child, who was floating in the water, face down, and a car seat was retrieved after the incident in the bay," he said.
A nearby boater brought the rescuer and child to shore and paramedics started treating them. The cause of the crash is still being investigated by Ocean City Police.
