Groundhog tests positive for rabies, Harford County urges residents to use caution

The Harford County Health Department is warning its residents that a groundhog tested positive for rabies in the area.  

The infected animal was found in the 3800 block of Old Federal Hill Road in Jarrettsville, Maryland. A statement issued by the county said it is possible that the groundhog may have exposed people or pets in the surrounding area.

Health officials said witnessing a groundhog is not a cause for alarm, but if individuals or their pets have encountered a groundhog in the area, they should contact the Harford County Health Department at 410-877-2300. 

Harford County is urging residents to protect themselves and their pets by keeping animals on a leash when out for walks, and keeping cats, dogs, and any other pets up to date on their rabies shots. 

The guidance also recommends not leaving any trash cans uncovered and keeping all pet food secured. Officials also warn against feeding, petting, or interacting with wildlife in any way. 

Lastly, Harford County Animal Control urges residents to notify them at 410-638-3505 if anyone observes a stray animal showing signs of excessive affection, aggression, lethargy, or disorientation.
