Frederick Officer's Resignation Closes Theft Case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A former Frederick police officer has resigned to resolve a charge she used stolen gift cards to buy home furnishings.

Charity Hoxie of Waynesboro, Pa., didn't appear at a hearing on the theft charge Monday in Washington County Circuit Court in Hagerstown.

Prosecutors agreed to place the charge on the inactive docket if Hoxie resigns and makes restitution to the owner of five Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards that were reported stolen last year from a Montgomery County apartment.

The cards were used at Bed Bath & Beyond store in Hagerstown.

Defense attorney John Salvatore says Hoxie has made restitution of $127.16.

Salvatore says it's not clear how Hoxie obtained the gift cards.

The Frederick Police Department says the veteran officer of nearly eight years resigned Oct. 11.
