Former Alderman Won't Be Listed As Sex Offender

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A former Annapolis alderman no longer has to register as a sex offender after being convicted of groping a male U.S. Naval Academy midshipman.

Samuel Shropshire was convicted in 2009 of second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense. Shropshire, 63, was sentenced in February to one weekend in jail and probation.

In September, Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris struck down the guilty findings and granted two probation orders for the May 2009 incident involving a 21-year-old midshipman.

Shropshire was accused of grabbing the midshipman's crotch after a night of drinking.

On Thursday, Harris said he was too hard on Shropshire in ordering him to register as a sex offender. The judge said it was within his discretion have a name dropped from the registry.
