Father Shot While Rescuing Son From Attempted Robbery In Patterson Park
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- An attempted robbery in Fells Point ended with gunfire. A father is recovering after being shot while trying to save his own son. Police have one suspect in custody but another is still on the loose.
Rick Ritter spoke exclusively with the son who was stuck in the middle of this brazen crime.
The 57-year-old father is being hailed as a hero after taking a bullet on what's typically a very quiet and safe street to save his son---a wild turn of events that could have easily been tragic.
After taking a bullet to the stomach, 57-year-old Bernie Fieden is counting his blessings.
"As lucky as someone can be who got shot, he got as lucky as he could be," said Chris Fieden.
In an exclusive interview with WJZ, his son Chris---who didn't want to show his face---shared the bizarre story of how his father saved his life.
"I understand if he didn't come outside, I would've lost all my stuff or caught a bullet to my face or something," he said.
Sunday night, the 18-year-old student who just finished exams at college came home to spend the holidays at his parents' house in upper Fells Point along Madeira Street.
The victim says he parked his car at Patterson Park, just a block away, when he turned the street corner where he lives. The two suspects followed him and met him at his front door.
"Got my key in the door when the one with the gun turned me around, put the gun in my face," he said. "I was on the ground; the one was trying to rip my backpack off. I was just holding my arms trying to make sure I still had it."
His father heard the commotion and ran outside to scare them away. That's when police say one of the suspects fired a bullet at the 57-year-old.
"The bullet hit him on the right side, just under the rib cage, through the fleshy part of the torso. Just barely nicked his liver," Chris said.
The suspects quickly fled but only one got away.
"We had a police officer out here who was basically doing his job, saw something that looked suspicious and didn't actually feel right. He intervened and was able to catch the suspect," said Donny Moses, Baltimore City police.
He's been identified as 18-year-old Eddie Cole Jr., who now faces a handful of charges, including attempted murder.
Chris' father is expected to make a full recovery---reminding him just how special a father/son bond is.
"Everything they say about parents and kids and the eternal defense mechanism, it's all real," Chris said.
Cole is being charged with first degree attempted murder and first degree attempted armed robbery. He's being held without bond at Central Booking.
Chris said his father could be released from the hospital as early as Tuesday evening.
Police say they need the public's help in identifying and catching the second suspect. Anyone who saw anything is urged to call police immediately.
