Dozens Of Maryland's Homeless Receive Free Dental Screenings
BEL AIR, Md. (WJZ)—Dozens of Maryland's homeless were treated to free dental exams in Edgewood last weekend.
The event was part of the United Way of Central Maryland's "Project Homeless Connect."
Earlier this year the "Project Homeless Connect" event offered assistance to more than 400 families in need, including many without a roof over their head. The event offered haircuts, dental exams and extractions, eye exams and glasses, identification cards, flu shots, employment services, housing, food and clothing giveaways, and much more.
According to the Harford County Health Department, 80 individuals requested dental examinations at the event, but due to time constraints only half of the participants could receive exams.
So, to help the remaining homeless seeking much needed dental care, the Harford County Health Department and United Way of Central Maryland hosted a March 12th event at the Harford County dental clinic.
Officials say individuals received dental exams, dental x-rays, and a great many extractions were performed to treat the extensive decay and considerable pain experienced by most participants.
"Homeless persons face significant barriers to the most basic health needs, such as nutrition, safety, and shelter, while barriers to meeting additional health needs, such as those requiring health services are even greater," said Harford County Health Officer Susan Kelly. "While seeking economic solutions for our country, we cannot forget our most vulnerable citizens."
HC Director of Administration and Dental Clinic Manager Marcy Austin says the patients were extremely grateful as was reflected in their many hugs and handshakes"
