Dez Bryant Says No Thanks
With training camps getting started around the country, it isn't much of a shocker that one of the bigger storylines of the week came from Big D, as in Dallas Texas.
As Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes to say, they do it bigger in Texas and just as they did when they originally drafted wide receiver Dez Bryant, the Boys are creating a stir. I speak of the aforementioned Dez Bryant, and his refusal to carry the pads of veteran receiver Roy Williams. Dez has since released a statement in which he is claiming his lack of knowledge of the "rookie hazing rule" as his reasoning in reacting in the manner he did. With this statement was his apology to Roy Williams and the rest of the organization who had previously deemed this situation a non issue. As irrelevant as a silly story like this may be, it becomes a little more news worthy when the name attached to it is the name of a player who was billed as having characters issues coming out of college. His explanation after the fact was puzzling as "rookie hazing" can be characterized as pretty much being common practice even in our every day lives. But with all of that said I may take a different stance in this issue than most, as the most interesting piece of the story isn't Dez Bryant's reaction but the other player associated with it, and that's Roy Williams. Roy Williams who's been a huge bust in Dallas ever since his arrival in Big D. I'm sure Jerry Jones and the decision makers in Dallas would give anything to have that 1st round pick and the that 3rd round pick back that they sent to Detroit in exchange for Williams. It was mind numbing then and is even more of a head scratcher now. Roy was traded for, so they wouldn't have to do what they ultimately ended up doing, and that's drafting a receiver in the first round to be that guy. Roy was picked up to be that guy and till now he simply hasn't been. Dez, on the other hand has been drafted to be that guy, so when he doesn't feel like carrying the pads of the "other guy" are you surprised? Being Dez is "that guy" shouldn't Roy be carrying his pads?? Confused yet? Anyway, with the drafting of Dez Bryant and the emergence last year of Miles Austin maybe Roy Williams will get his wish. Maybe Dez will grant him his request and carry his pads…all the way to the trunk of his car as Roy is given his papers to continue his career elsewhere.
