Court Decision Against Md. Farmers To Be Appealed

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Defense lawyers are appealing a $1 million court decision against two Maryland farmers stemming from a 2009 collision between a car and a large seeder-planter.

A judge in October ordered Thomas Edward Shockley and co-defendant John Thomas, two Eastern Shore farmers, to pay more than $1 million in damages after a man in the car lost an eye. The Daily Times of Salisbury says it's the largest known judgment in a case of its kind in the area.

Lawyers say they'll appeal to the Court of Appeals now that their motion for a new trial has been denied.

The case stems from a 2009 accident that occurred when a seeder-planter latched to the rear of a tractor-trailer cab driven by Shockley overrode a car and crashed into its windshield.
