Coronavirus Latest: 38.8K COVID-19 Cases In Maryland; Number Of Hospitalizations At Lowest Point In 3 Weeks
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- Maryland officials on Sunday reported an increase of 836 coronavirus cases in the past day, but the number of hospitalizations dropped.
The state's new total stands at 38,804 as of Sunday morning. In total, 1,876 Marylanders have been confirmed to have died due to COVID-19 and another 116 deaths were probably caused by the virus, officials said.
Coronavirus Latest: Nearly 40K COVID-19 Cases In Maryland, Hospitalizations Still Down
The number of hospitalized patients dropped from 1,500 on Saturday to 1,460 on Sunday. Of those in the hospital, 562 are in intensive care and 898 are in acute care. The total number of hospitalizations is at its lowest point in 22 days.
On Saturday, the state reported 37,968 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,842 confirmed deaths.
Eight of the top ten hardest-hit ZIP codes are in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, while the remaining ZIP codes -- 21224 and 21215 -- include parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
Meanwhile, the state reported more than 156,000 COVID-19 tests have come back negative. Nearly 4,000 new negative tests were reported between Saturday and Sunday.
The latest available data continues to show nursing homes are bearing the brunt of the virus's impact. There have been 7,538 cases tied to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Just over 2,200 of those cases are among staff members while the majority -- 5,329 -- are among residents.
Eleven staff members and 984 residents have died from the virus.
Within the state's correctional system, the latest data shows 80 inmates have contracted COVID-19 and five have died. Meanwhile, 335 staff members have tested positive for the virus.
