Comments Provoke Women's Vigil In Frederick

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The Frederick County Commission for Women is holding a candlelight vigil provoked by comments about marriage and child-rearing made by two conservative county commissioners.

The event is planned from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in front of Winchester Hall, the downtown building where the county commissioners meet.

Commission President Jennifer Charlton-Shuldes says the vigil is a response to comments made by Republicans Paul Smith and Kirby Delauter about the sacrifices their wives made to stay home and raise their children.

The men made the comments at a Feb. 8 meeting at which they voted to cut county funding for Head Start, an educational daycare program for poor families.
