College Gets $6.7M Bequest From Graduate's Estate

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- McDaniel College says it has received a bequest for $6.7 million, the largest in the college's history, from the estate of an 1891 graduate.

College President Roger Casey said Monday that the bequest from Philip Henry Dorsey will be used to establish an endowment for scholarships.

Dorsey graduated from then-Western Maryland College, one of 18 students awarded a degree in 1891. Dorsey returned to St. Mary's County, where he helped to manage farmland and bought and sold crops. He never married.

Dorsey died in 1945. His will established a trust fund to provide scholarships for his descendants to attend the college. Five of his descendants have earned degrees from the college.

McDaniel has received a check for more than $975,000 as the first installment of the gift.
