Buck Ball: Go Figure
It's been five wins in six games since Buck Showalter took over as Orioles manager and those 5 wins have been against playoff contending teams (Angels and White Sox). All six games have featured a "quality" start by an O's pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie delivering the latest in Sunday's 4-3 win (a result that was in doubt when Alfredo Simon allowed two runs to Chicago in the top of the ninth). Many have observed that the recent run in success is attributable to
an apparent up-tick in intensity and energy by the players (some players have confirmed the observation). I like what Jeremy Guthrie said after the victory Sunday: "If you need a manager to motivate you then you're in the wrong business." Bravo, Jeremy- but human nature is such that a new boss can bring out a heightened sense of accountability and this is a team that needed it.
The fans are enjoying it (and they deserve something to cheer for!). Showalter himself voiced the hope that the buzz in the fan base grows over the coming years to where it becomes difficult for Yankees and Red Sox fans to get tickets at O's games at Camden Yards. Nothing like dreaming big, but as bad as it's been- any positive (including dreams) is welcomed when it comes to baseball in Baltimore.
And as bad as they've been, how unlikely is this? Even with an overall record of 37-74, the Orioles are 15-4 in one run games at home. And, their record in extra inning games is 9-3 (best in the Majors). Go figure. How much longer does Buck Ball continue to roll like it is now?
