Boy, 12, Charged With Robberies, 200 Cases Of Vandalism

COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) -- Howard County Police say two juveniles, including a 12-year-old boy, have been charged in three armed robberies in Columbia. Officers say the 12-year-old also faces charges in nearly 200 cases of spray-paint vandalism.

The department said in a news release Friday that in each of the robberies, which took place in January and February, the youths approached people walking in Columbia. Investigators say one would ask to use the person's cellphone to call his mother, then both would pull a gun or knife and demand property.

Police arrested 16-year-old Michael Mays of Columbia this week. He is charged as an adult with armed robbery, theft and assault.

Police say the 12-year-old, who cannot be charged as an adult, is charged with robbery, theft and assault and destruction of property.
