WEATHER BLOG: Hot, Hot, Hot
Before we get into the weather, we have to remember the reason for this weekend. Thanks to all our troops and their families who put their lives on the line each and every day, especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The heat continues. We topped out at 89 degrees again Sunday afternoon after starting out a very muggy 68 degrees. We are going to remain in this air mass again Monday, starting out near 70 degrees and topping out near 90 degrees once again.
During this time, there is a front passing north of us. That front has created a cluster of severe thunderstorms across Pennsylvania. The thunderstorms will weaken significantly as they march southeastward toward Maryland (especially the northern half of the state) but some may hold together for a few showers or thunderstorms later on Sunday evening. Everything will wind down overnight with some fog forming. Then, we could see another round of thunderstorms firing again Monday afternoon.
Things start to change on Tuesday. That's when a front approaching from the Midwest with moisture from Beryl moves northward, resulting in scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Mid-Atlantic. It will still be warm and very muggy with highs in the mid/upper 80s. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms through early Wednesday before the front pushes everything offshore later in the day. Behind that front, cooler and more refreshing air will arrive.
Now, to the latest on Beryl. At 5 p.m., Beryl became a full blown tropical storm with winds up to 65 mph. This storm is strengthening as it moves west toward the north Florida/south Georgia coast. It is expected to make landfall later Sunday, possibly strengthening even more before it does. It doesn't have a whole lot of time left but only needs to get to winds of 74 mph to make it a hurricane. Beryl will weaken as it sits over land for about a day and a half, then re-emerge over water and take off to the northeast. It could become a tropical storm again as it passes south of Maryland early in the week.
