BLOG: 2 Days 'Til Spring

The surface high over the Atlantic should move farther offshore at the end of the week allowing winds to veer to a more south-southwest direction, which will bring the opportunity for temps to approach 80 (Friday). There is also a "window of warmth opportunity" on Monday as a weak disturbance entering the large upper high over the East dies on our doorstep. This disturbance will bring clouds and risk for showers on Monday but may also serve to torque our wind to a more southerly direction in which case temps on Monday afternoon would hit the mid 70s.

Next chance for substantial rain will not be until the weekend as the potent jet stream disturbance that is bringing the rain and snow to the western U.S. Sunday slowly crosses the Plains and Mississippi Valley (with heavy rain and severe thunderstorms) at midweek and likely reaches the East Coast by next weekend. By the time the system reaches the East Coast, some of its energy will be sapped. Nevertheless, we can expect a period of heavy rain and perhaps some gusty thunderstorms. Timing of the system's arrival is uncertain ... could be as early as late Friday or as late as early on Sunday.

THE PARTICULARS:
Sunday... The day will dawn with low clouds and fog as onshore winds from off the Atlantic import relatively cool, moist air. These clouds should breakup in the morning as winds become more SSE and import milder air (except along the north shore of the Bay) Sunday night .. Carbon copy of Saturday night ... partly cloudy skies will yield to areas of fog and low clouds. A weak jet stream disturbance approaching from the west will bring increasing mid clouds later. Monday ... Early morning low clouds and fog will yield to mostly cloudy skies as the weak jet stream disturbance passes overhead and stalls. A few showers are expected, but much of the time will stay dry. Despite the clouds, it will be unseasonably mild.
