Baltimore Police Investigate Homicide On School Grounds

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--A Northwest Baltimore elementary school is shut down after an 18-year-old boy is found murdered behind the campus.

Monique Griego has the latest on the investigation and reaction from parents.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday, a gruesome discovery turns Windsor Hills Elementary/Middle in Northwest Baltimore into a crime scene.

"When I seen the yellow tape I was like 'Somebody has gotten shot or is dead over there,'" said Deborah Lyle.

And she was right.

Police say just beyond the jungle gym, a woman walking her dog found the body of an 18-year-old boy who'd been shot multiple times.

"It's paranoid because my kids go over there and play," Lyle said.

Although parents were notified not to bring their kids to school, police don't know of any link to the campus.

"At this point we don't see a connection to the school but it is early in the investigation," said Sgt. Anthony Smith.

Investigators believe the homicide may be related to a shots fired call that came in around midnight  from about a block away.

"The person that called heard gun shots in the area. Officers did a door-to-door canvass, walked though the neighborhood and at that time did not discover anything," Smith said.

As for parents like Lyle, just seeing homicide detectives at their child's school has left them shook up.

"I was praying it wasn't somebody that go to the school. But it's still a child," Lyle said.

Police have yet to identify the victim. School district leaders declined to comment at the scene.
