Baltimore Officials Open Summer Curfew Center

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- After several incidents of youth violence in the city, leaders are doing what they can to make sure kids aren't out at all hours of the night.

Monique Griego has more on one way they hope to do that.

City leaders are opening up the curfew center. Its goal is not only to keep kids off the streets but also to hold parents accountable.

Over St. Patrick's Day in downtown Baltimore, large groups of teens terrorized the streets as police emergency recordings captured the chaos.

"Don't need no one on the air. Please just listen up. I need somebody to go to Pratt and Light. A medic is trying to get through. Someone has stomped a male in the crowd. The ambo just passed a large group of kids assaulting the male with one child on the ground," one recording said.

A few weeks later, another mob of youths took over a 7-Eleven, raiding the shelves and even punching an employee.

City leaders are hoping to help stop youth violence with a weekend curfew center. The center, which is located inside city school headquarters, will be open Friday and Saturday from midnight to 6 a.m. Besides keeping kids off the streets, its goal is also to hold parents accountable for where their children are.

The center will be open June 15 through Aug. 11.

The mayor, Baltimore City police and city schools all work together to support the program.
