Western Maryland Covered In Snow; Roads Icy And Treacherous

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Although the Baltimore area experienced heavy rain Wednesday night, other parts of the state are feeling the effects of a wintry mix.

Gigi Barnett shows us the storm's impact in Western Maryland.

The snow and ice made the roads of Western Maryland a slick and slippery mess, a very dangerous commute for drivers.

The rising sun over Western Maryland revealed what mother nature left behind late Wednesday night. Trees, sidewalks and benches are all covered in snow.

"It's very pretty out here," said one resident.

Some of the first to see it were truckers working overnight and driving in the storm. They pull in at a rest stop off of I-70. Truckers say the farther west they go, the more snow they see.

"Roads a little bit west of here are worst than the east," trucker David Larson said. "It's frozen on the tops of mountains and it's nasty."

Truckers say the western part of the state may look like a winter wonderland, but icy roads make driving treacherous.

"You slide all over the road and people don't understand that trucks slide just like cars do," Larson said. "So, we just do the best we can do."

While Baltimore didn't see much snow, the snow triggered the first Code Blue of the season, which opened many heating shelters.
