7-year-old victim identified after deadly accidental shooting in Milford Mill, Maryland home
A 7-year-old girl died after an accidental shooting inside a home in Milford Mill, Maryland Tuesday, according to Baltimore County police.
Officers responded around 3:15 p.m. to the 7800 block of Selgrave Road, where police said they found the girl suffering from "a gunshot wound to the upper body." She was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police believe adults were in the home at the time of the shooting. No charges have been filed at this point in the investigation.
"We don't know how the shooting took place, but we do believe it was accidental in nature," Baltimore County Police Det. Trae Corbin said. "Anytime a child's life is lost, it's absolutely tragic."
On Wednesday, police identified the child as Alayah Terrell.
Neighbor Shauntelle Alston, who has her own 7-year-old, called the child's death "heartbreaking."
"My heart goes out to them. I'm lost for words. I couldn't even imagine how that would feel," Alston added. "I can say, just prayers go up to the family. It's a lot to lose a child."
A Baltimore County community three miles away, on Talles Road in Gwynn Oak, was shaken after two children were found fatally shot inside of a home on July 7.
Police identified the children as 9-year-old Steve Allen and 15-year-old Giovanna Myrie, who were brother and sister. There have been no arrests in that case.
"This is a problem"
Center for Hope Deputy Director Community Violence Programs Penny Green said accidental shootings have been an ongoing issue.
"It's all over our nation," Green said. "So many kids have died accidentally and the heartbreak that happens with this is immeasurable."
Green stresses the importance of gun safety. That includes properly storing a weapon and using gun locks.
"Keep the guns safe and keep it away from people and children who would probably use it improperly," Green said.
Green said the Center for Hope partnered with Safer Futures to pass out gun locks.
"We have gun locks in the ED," Green said. "We have gun locks at Center for Hope and they're free just to make sure that you have them."
Green said it's an effort to make sure another accidental shooting doesn't happen again.
